Hello again from Lizard Island! It is Thursday morning here.
A special hello to Mr. Willard's computer lab! We hope you are enjoying studying Australia as much as we have enjoyed visiting! There are so many interesting things to see and different terrains in this country - one that is almost as big as the United States but with less than 10% of the population.
So, some good news and mildly bad news - the good news is that we are still having a great time here! On the (slightly) negative side, our computer's broadband cord is not working so no more pictures until we get back to a wireless zone - hopefully Friday night :(
What have we been doing? Well, on Tuesday, Craig spent the whole day out on the dive boat (8:30am-3:30pm). It was about an hour trip to the outer reef where they did two one hour dives. One dive site was 'Dynamite' (a shallow reef dive with spectacular sealife) and the second was the famous 'Cod Hole', one of the top 10 dive sites in Australia. It is called 'Cod Hole' because it is the home of the large potato cod, 3-6 feet long and can weigh up to 500 pounds. They are very docile fish and you can pet them like a dog (but stay away from the big mouth)! 'Cod Hole' is also next to 'Shark Alley' where they saw a few black tip reef sharks. On the way back in, they stopped to feed one of the local nurse sharks and another large cod named Charlie who is even larger than the potato cod! Craig didn't have an underwater camera but one of the guides did, so pictures will be forthcoming. Bess had a quiet day, sitting by the pool, resting on the beach, going to the spa, and eating delicious food here on the island.
On Wednesday, we took it easy - slept in, ate a leisurely breakfast, read by the pool, swam, snorkeled off the beach, and rested. There was a late afternoon shower that lasted about an hour but that did not deter us. We were particularly glad when the rain stopped, though, since we had a private beach dinner scheduled (they do up to 2 a night). After consulting with us, the chef had made a personalized (and huge!) menu which was delicious; and they had set up a beautiful little tented area for us with tiki torches. We will post pictures of that dinner as well.
It rained some more overnight and early this morning, but seems to have cleared up. We are going to take out a motorized dinghy and go around the island to do some snorkeling and to visit some of the little coves and beaches. They are packing us a picnic lunch to take. It should be a lot of fun!
We leave here tomorrow midday and fly down to Sydney (via Cairns) where we rent a car and drive to the Blue Mountains (90 minutes outside of the city). We will post more soon and add pictures from the last couple days when we can.
